Feature request

Postby dobrevjetser » 01.07.09, 15:02

Hi,

Would it be possible to add the following feature to DE ?

To reread a sector under the cursor, even when a previous read has failed ?
Now i always have to use clear map for one sector
The sector i want to read is in the MFT and very important.
So i would like to retry after changing some parameters.
So an option on a right mouse click above a sector could be: Clear current sectormap and reread

What do you guys think?

I second that!

if I may add my opinion, please also add a "clear all unread sectors map" button

so that we can re-read all unread sectors with new paratemeters, like read retries=99 for example ...

A nice feature would also be to append the error-reports at the end of the previous one.
All to often i have to interrupt the recovery process to un-check a file that gives problems, to be prompted everytime to write the error-report file.
Then i have to change the name so that it is not overwriting previous reports and finally i have to copy all error-reports into one file.

Another good idea would be to calculate MD5-HASH for a cloned drive and to sumarize it's bad sectors

Follows a sample report idea based on MTL:

--------------------------[ REPORT START ] -------------------------------------------
Cloning Drive to Drive Report

Date: Thu Dec 16 10:19:30 2004
----------------- Source Drive -------------------
IDE HDD 002
Model Number : Maxtor 6E040L0
Serial Number : E176Q4JE
Firmware Revision: NAR61590

Geometry:
Cylinders: 79656, Heads: 16, Sectors: 63, Sector Size: 512,
Total Sectors: 80293248 (Size: 40.14 GB)

Starting Position:
LBA : 0

Finishing Position:
LBA : 10303089

MD5 Message Digest for Drive Area:

--------------- Destination Drive ----------------
IDE HDD 000
Model Number : Maxtor 4D060H3
Serial Number : D3HCTJKE
Firmware Revision: DAK019K0

Geometry:

Total Sectors: 117231408 (Size: 58.61 GB)

Finishing Position:

Completion Time: 1 hours 26 minutes

DE Feature request #2 - cloning features

Postby -BR- » 16.07.09, 23:47

It should have a #2 jump size option.

In a copy where jump size = 1000, let's suppose we have a lot of bad sectors concentrated in one area, maybe they could even broke heads.

Something like that would be very usefull:

If found more than XXXXXXXX bad sectors in the last YYYYYYYY read sectors, then ignore normal jump and jump ZZZZZZZZ sectors

Example:

If found more than 100 bad sectors in the last 500000 read sectors, then ignore normal jump (jump #1 setting, which is 1000) and jump 1000000 sectors

Hi,

A graphical identifier like a 'tick' box, perhaps green ticks at the start of procedure, if the data is not copied becasue of errors then red X, that way you can very quickly decide at end of the process what needs extra attention, I know the error report is generated, however this would be very useful.

A more accurate reporting on folder and file size, I know this is difficult for damaged drives.

Map creation and saved defects to re-import after clone for more 'intense' fianl scan like read, ignore ECC.

maybe the Good algoritm will be like this...

first section clone the Good area and skip the bad sector. ( the WHOLE LBA )
like when found bad sector will skip 100.000 ( configurable ) and read reversed until found bad sector. the skiped will be saved in database and will be read in the next section. clone process will continue until the last LBA with same algorithm..

the second section will clone the skipped area that was saved in database. but now the skiped areas will automatically change to 50.000 ( half valued from the first variable or minimum value in skipped area divided by 2). if this second section still leave some skipped area still uncloned. then will continued to third section with skipped area was changed automaticalled based on the minimum value of skipped area divided by 2.

if still uncompleted will continued to forth section or fifth section until the clone process was 100% DONE

ALL this process will make the clone process become automatic with first cloned the Good area and leave the seriuosly bad sector cloned in the last section...

Wish List for Data Extractor

Postby Arthur » 29.07.09, 10:42

There is many different topics with feature requests and suggestions for DE. I think a common topic for this would be good so the developers can look in the same place. I'll start with my old suggestion and a new one.

Audible Alarm

Sometimes when we run a task unattended, it would be nice to able to configure an audible alarm that triggers when reading errors is encountered. It should be possible to confirm and turn the alarm off. I think this could be very useful.

Original datestamp for dir's

When saving files/dir's, the original datestamp for directorys is not restored. Probably an easy thing to implement.

I showed this wish-list to developer and he had some quesions about it.

1. Audible Alarm for Data Extractor.
Please tell, what operations should have Audible Alarm at their finish?
Please make me a list of them. I think "Partition analysis" should have it.

2. Recovered files creation data was not actual.
I checked this problem on some cases and the data was correct.
Please show me the examples of cases, where the data was not correct.
What operation were done before you got it?

3. Jump size should set to bigger value when the surface we are scanning, has a large number of badsectors. "Big" and "Small" option for jump on bad sector.
Developer liked this idea good. Very likely next versions Data Extractor will have it. Please check our news.

4. MD5-HASH for a cloned drive and to sumarize it's bad sectors.
Developers told me it is possible to do this but it will took much time to calculate MD5-Hash for big capacity drives.

5. if I may add my opinion, please also add a "clear all unread sectors map" button.
Well, developers suggested not to put this button, but I think they could do a shortcut for this.

6. A nice feature would also be to append the error-reports at the end of the previous one.
Yes. Future versions very likely will have this.

7. files with dot in the beginning like ".filename" problem
Yes. Developer is working on it.

When saving files with "skip files that contain errors" and checked option "delete corrupted" file if all files in dir were corrupted DE leaves empty dir. I think empty dirs should be deleted also.

The alarm should trigger when loss of readiness is encountered when copying.
Sometimes very bad sectors is expected and you need to take immediate action when they appears. Maybe a power off option is good as well.

Could be like this in the configuration window for script of actions for Loss of readiness:

- Sound an alarm and break the copy process (if not DRD within xxx mS)
- Turn of drive's power and stay off

Sorry, I only meant the directory dates, not the file dates. It is only the original DIR dates that not is restored.
