Samsung MLC SSD S3C29RBB01-YK40 128Gb throws ABR errors

Postby Fraser Corrance » 17.11.17, 02:54

Hello all,

This is Marcos, Fraser's co-worker. I am going to explain my case and see if you guys can help me out.

We got a Samsung MLC SSD S3C29RBB01-YK40 128Gb which does not come ready when using guymager or similar applications to read the SMART info. When connected to the PC3k, the status registers "DRD", "DSC" and SATA "PHY", as well as the power channels seem correctly lit.

However, when trying to auto-start the utility (auto-identification or after selecting the family) the drive returns an "ABR" error and hangs. I can still open the utility and select the family and controller from the ensuing menu. This is the corresponding log result:

Selected family......................... : Samsung MLC SSD
Controller.............................. : S3C29RBB01-YK40

Model................................... : Passport not loaded

SSD status:
SSD is in ready state................... : Yes
SSD is locked........................... : No
SSD is in Safe Mode..................... : No
Loader uploaded......................... : No
Logical access is possible.............. : No
Physical access is possible............. : No

Then the loader menu is prompted and I can initiate PM800.ldr with FW BVM25D1Q in safe mode (you can see I had to short circuit the board a couple times before getting it :D):

Loader uploading
****************************************
Code name............................... : PM800.ldr

Power Off
Power On
Ready state waiting..................... : Ok
Safe mode............................... : Error
Power Off
Power On
Ready state waiting..................... : Ok
Safe mode............................... : Ok
Write HDD microcode
Waiting 2 sec.
Ready state waiting..................... : Ok
Write Initialization Firmware........... : Ok

Write HDD microcode
Waiting 2 sec.
Ready state waiting..................... : Ok
Write Main Firmware..................... : Ok

SSD status:
SSD is in ready state................... : Yes
SSD is locked........................... : No
SSD is in Safe Mode..................... : No
Loader uploaded......................... : Yes
Logical access is possible.............. : No
Physical access is possible............. : Possibly
****************************************
Test completed

In this point the drive's passport is still unknown and the drive is still unresponsive. The majority of the test I try to run fail:

Microchips information uploading........ : UDMA Stop error: DA=0;CS0N=[1];CS1N=[1];DDMARDYN=[1];STOP=[0];HDMARDYN_HSTROBE=[1];STATE=3;DMACKN=[0];DMARQ=[1]

After running tests, DRQ register and DMA RQ remain lit!

What I can do now is to re-load the utility and bypass the safe mode. This is what I get:

SSD status:
SSD is in ready state................... : Yes
SSD is locked........................... : No
SSD is in Safe Mode..................... : No
Loader uploaded......................... : Yes
Logical access is possible.............. : No
Physical access is possible............. : Possibly
****************************************

USER password........................... : Set
USER password........................... : [Encrypted (SEC_SHA1)]

This gives me another piece of the puzzle, and it corresponds to the information found in the manual for samsung drives throwing ABR errors.

I can also run the test-> service information -> security subsystem -> view password information, and this is the result:

HDD SECURITY SUBSYSTEM
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------
MASTER password......................... : [Encrypted (SEC_SHA1)]
USER password........................... : [Encrypted (SEC_SHA1)]
Master Code............................. : FFFF
USER password is set.................... : Yes
Security level.......................... : Maximum
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------

Unfortunately, when trying Tools -> SSD -> SSD Security Subsystem -> Open HDD, both master and user passwords are empty.

According to the manual, it is possible to reset/clear the passwords without losing the user information, but I have not tried.

If I run other tests (for example NAND chips test), I always get the same result:

Microchips information uploading........ : UDMA Stop error: DA=0;CS0N=[1];CS1N=[1];DDMARDYN=[1];STOP=[0];HDMARDYN_HSTROBE=[1];STATE=3;DMACKN=[0];DMARQ=[1]
Operation aborted

So, it looks I am stuck in this point, though I have the options of clearing the passwords and trying to upload an updated firmware version ...

Do you guys have a recommendation on how to proceed or a comment about the steps I have followed and if I should change any of them?

Thanks in advance!

Best regards,

Marcos

Hello Marcos. Looks like you are dooing too many steps but not all of them are correct :) Please create a new ticket in our TS department and attach a good pictures of your drive. We will check it more detail.
