HDT721010SLA360 after PCB replacement

I have a HDT721010SLA360.

Original PCB dead, disk not spinning, no indicator in utility.

Replaced PCB, transferred NV-RAM and ROM. Drive spins up and DRD/DSC. ID on utility start fails with UNC/INF/AMN. I select the family HDx7210SL and start utility, here is the log

I tried:

NV-RAM adjustment (SA search) - each read attempt fails with INF

Editing NV-RAM and changing heads to 5 from 6 - no difference except that drive stays busy after a read attempt

Obviously, can't read any modules.

What can I do next? Is there a way to check integrity of NV-RAM data (CS OK when I tried NV-RAM edit)? Is it possible that pre-amp is faulty although drive gets DRD/DSC?

Any idea and suggestion much appreciated.

Have you checked if heads are unlatching and trying to read SA ?

Hi datalabace,

I have not opened the drive (yet) but by the sound of it the head stack is not moving at all - there is no calibration sound or any other sound when I power up the drive except platters spinning.

So my guess would be that the heads are not trying to read SA when I power up the drive. I don't know if this model has a ramp or heads are parked on the platters.

You should open just to confirm that (as long as you have the conditions to open the drives).

I have an identical old failed drive (bad heads) so I opened that one, heads are parked on the ramp.

With this case it was the third time lucky - the drive came to life with the third donor PCB that I tried - they are supposedly all the same and all working but only one could do the job. I also had to perform NV-RAM adjustment - not sure why as I transplanted both original ROM and NV-RAM to donor PCB. Anyhow, another successful data recovery.
